Turquoise/Teal has always been my favorite color! In 2005 my beloved Mother (pictured at right) was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. Teal just happens to be the designated color of awareness for Ovarian Cancer. As a family we were totally all about TEAM PINK in fact my Mother, Loretta, an avid walker had hoped to train for the 3-day Walk for Breast Cancer–that all changed that July day she was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer.
She courageously battled against Ovarian Cancer for +4 years like a fierce warrior! For everyDAY she graced this earth was indeed a present, a reminder to stay in the present moment. My Yoga practice teaches me that nothing in this life is permanent and my Mother’s cancer diagnosis only reinforced it!
On August 31, 2009 my Mother left her physical body suffering no more…
In Sanskrit, the word Seva, translates into service. I am proud to serve in this role of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Activist joyfully using my platform as a Yoga teacher to cultivate greater awareness and to raise money for this incredible cause.
In 2009 I walked in the Break the Silence–Ovarian Cancer Walk raising almost $2000.00 for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition in Phoenix.
Later that year I hosted the YAMA day at Hegel Yoga in Tempe, AZ if you are ever in Phoenix please practice there and tell Tish I sent ya. The YAMA day focused on Yoga, Art, Meditation and Ayurveda with 60% of the proceeds earned going directly to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund in memory of my Mother.
In 2010 and 2011 I offered donation based Yoga classes to further raise $$$ and awareness for Ovarian Cancer. The simple concept of donation based Yoga (or pay what you can afford) made Yoga accessible and affordable to all AND still raised $$$ for Ovarian Cancer Research.* I believe in donating the dollars to science and research as I am already doing my part to spread the message of awareness!
Earlier this year I partnered with the Every Woman Health Club to offer a one-time donation based Yoga With A Cause: Fundraiser for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. EWHC proudly donated the space to offer this event allowing all the money raised to directly benefit Ovarian Cancer Research. During Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, September, I presented the totally TEAL now campaign on Facebook. totally TEAL now was created as an event on Facebook to encourage both ladies and men who love ladies to be more aware & alert to the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer. I posted everyDAY for 30 days with information, articles, and organizations of where to donate dollars. I also wore TEAL clothing everDAY in September to further the cause…
I am so grateful the POTUS signed (again) the presidential proclamation designating September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness month read the proclamation here. This month starting on September 8 and ending October 6 2013, I will be partnering again with Lululemon Burlingame to offer community based Yoga classes. So honored I am to have taught these classes now going into the third year in a row. Class runs from 930 to 1045am and be sure to bring your Yoga mat. See you there…
In 2014, I became a JADE YOGA ambassador. JADE offers a TEAL yoga mat with proceeds of said mat going directly to benefit Ovarian Cancer. Learn more about Jade Yoga.
